The Story

Surrounded by woods at the base of the Alps in one of Bavaria’s most beautiful valleys, lies Kaufbeuren. Medieval towers, impressive houses, churches rich with art and quaint squares give the town its character. It’s also home to Aktien Brewery, now known as ABK.

In 1308 the Aktien Brewery of Kaufbeuren, along with its cellars, courtyard and barns, was donated to the citizens of Kaufbeuren by Henry Twinger, a wealthy local Baron. In the century that followed Aktien brewery grew substantially, purchasing other breweries in the Kaufbeuren area and building a reputation for superb beers. By the 15th Century, the Aitken Brewery had become one of Bavaria’s most popular and successful breweries.

To ensure only the highest quality beers would continue to be produced in Kaufbeuren, The Kaufbeuren Brewers Guild was formed in 1325 making a declaration that all beers produced in Kaufbeuren could only use barley, hops, yeasts and the purest local waters.  All other ingredients were banned. This was almost 200 years prior to the nationwide purity law known as the “Reinheitsgebot” that was passed by Duke William IV in 1516.

By the 17th Century, under the watchful eye of legendary master brewer Zur Traube Güldenen, the Aktien Brewery had mastered the recipes that are still used to this very day.

Since then, Aktien Brewery has dominated the world’s beer competitions, winning dozens of awards and Gold medals and cementing themselves as one of Bavaria’s most famous and highly regarded breweries. They continue to exclusively use only the finest locally grown Hallertau hops and grains from the same local farms they have been using for over 700 years.

Tonight’s beer, Dunkel, is one of the breweries most popular brews. A beer that represents ABK’s roots, and tradition. It's gloriously dark and rich with notes of caramel and dark chocolate. Munich is famous for its iconic ‘Dunkels’ and we think this is right up there.
