In 1872 two brothers, named George and Ernest, bought a brewery in the sleepy Suffolk coastal resort of Southwold and set about building a business their family could be proud of.
The plan was only half-successful.
Ernest applied himself to the task of creating ales for discerning drinkers of high and low estate. He did so well that the Adnams Brewery still flourishes today. His lasting legacy is a modern company with a thriving portfolio of pubs, hotels, kitchen supplies, shops – and, of course, a range of mostly traditional fine ales which are widely available in barrel and bottle. These days Adnams are adored by craft beer geeks and real ale purists. That’s quite a feat.
The other brother George, alas, grew disenchanted with the life of a country brewer and took ship for South Africa, where he was eaten by a crocodile. Not so good.
Over the years the brewery has seen multiple regenerations and expansions. By 2006 Adnams became one of the first breweries in the UK to open a sustainable distribution centre in Reydon, which has a living green roof, lime and hemp walls and rainwater harvesting facility.
In 2013 they began to dip their toe in the world of craftier beers, launching a range of more experimental brews under the Jack Brand label. This included some firm favourites such as their Dry Hopped Lager and Mosaic pale ale, which still have craft beer aficionados talking to this day.
Since then they’ve continued down the route of experimentation, brewing the UK’s first carbon-neutral beer in 2008, becoming the UK’s first brewery allowed to open their own distillery in 2010 and most recently brewing their first English Cider in 2019. All whilst brewing what are still some of the most popular beers in the county.
For tonight’s beer we have Eastern Edge, brewed in collaboration with American powerhouses Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. Eastern Edge is brewed with both UK and US varieties of Cascade and Chinook hops. You’ll find floral and resinous aromas and flavours of grapefruit, lychee, and pineapple. A spicy, biscuity balance is provided by Pale Ale and Cara malts, and rye grown by Adnams Chairman, Jonathan Adnams.
