Brasserie d’Orval’s sole aim when they started selling beer commercially in 1931 was to make enough money to re-build their Abbey. The name “Orval” is a reference to the ‘golden valley’ of Villers-devant-Orval in the Belgian province of Luxembourg. Local legend has it that a countess from Tuscany lost her golden ring in a lake in said valley. She pledged that if it were returned to her, she would thank God by building an Abbey. The ring was brought to the surface of the lake by a trout.
