In 2006 James Watt and Martin Dickie, two old school friends, “bored of the industrially brewed lagers and stuffy ales that dominated the UK market” and inspired by breweries on the West Coast of America like Stone Brewing and Ballast Point, brewed their first batch of Punk IPA from a garage near Aberdeen.
Soon after, they scraped together ten grand in savings, blagged another thirty from the local council and set about building arguably the most successful new brewery the UK has seen since the industrial revolution.
Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the past decade you’ll have heard of BrewDog and their successes. You may not, however, have heard of Overworks. In late 2018 BrewDog opened the doors to their Overworks brewery. A facility dedicated to sour beers with a particular focus on experimental yeast strains and wild fermentation.
Tonight’s BeerBods Plus we have Krampus Nicht, a black sour fermented with cinnamon, clove, star anise and orange zest before being aged in cognac barrels. This devilish take on mulled wine blends sour red berries with winter spices for a tart and complex finish.
