TWB Trappist Achel Bruin BeerBods Plus Beer

Achel 8 Bruin by Brouwerij der St. Benedictusabdij de Achelse

Dubbel, 8%

This Bruin (Dubbel) has a dark amber hue and a strong offwhite head that smells of dark fruits. The body is appropriately thin, a side effect of using "candi" sugar to make the beer brown and boost the alcohol content. Phenolic flavours from the yeast include pepper and clove with a bit of banana as well as hints of dark dried fruits.

The Story

Brouwerij der St. Benedictusabdij de Achelse somewhat surprisingly was only founded in 1998, but like many Abbey breweries, has a brewing history that stretches all the way back to 1648 when Dutch monks built a chapel in Achel.

The chapel became an abbey in 1686 but was destroyed during the French Revolution. In 1844, the ruins were rebuilt by monks from Westmalle, and various farming activities began. The first beer to be brewed on the site was recorded in 1852, and 19 years later became a Trappist monastery, with brewing happening on a much more regular basis.

In 1914 during World War I, the monks left the abbey due to German occupation. The Germans dismantled the brewery in 1917 and it wasn’t until 1998 the monks decided to begin brewing again. Monks from the Trappist Abbey of Westmalle and Rochefort assisted in the building of the new brewery.
