Jasper Cuppaidge arrived in the UK on a gap year nearly 20 years ago. After missing his flight home he got a job collecting dirty glasses in a London boozer. After working his way to the top there he decided to buy the Horseshoe in Hampstead, where he started brewing in the basement, recreating the beers once brewed by his family in Rockhampton, Australia. It was in this basement that the idea for one of the UK’s most successful craft breweries was born.
In 2010, Jasper and a few of his bar owner friends launched Camden Town. Originally based underneath the railway arches between Camden and Kentish Town Tube station. The team spent 6 months converting seven old Victorian railway arches and installed a beautiful modern brewery. They set out on a mission to brew the best lager these shores had ever seen.
Our aim was to make lager that people loved. We decided to limit ourselves to a narrow range of beers and concentrate on getting those just right. We became obsessed with fine-tuning every element of the process to make the beers the best they could possibly be. When you’re brewing lager, there’s nowhere to hide.
To say the team at Camden experienced success is the understatement of the century. 10 years on they continue to lead the way for craft breweries in the UK. Their flagship Hells lager continues to break records worldwide, bridging the gap between craft and mainstream lager.
In 2017 Camden moved production to a state of the art facility in Enfield. The move allowed them to expand capacity significantly but also freed up space at the original brewery for a new project, Arch 55. Using the original brewery and kit, Arch 55 is a small batch brewery dedicated to experimentation. The brewery produces one-off specials, pushing the boundaries of what lager can be. It’s also the birthplace of this week’s beer.
Bock is (mostly) brewed in true Bavarian style, cold fermented slow to bring out a balance between light hops and dark malt. The addition of experimental hop HBC472 brings bourbon and vanilla oakiness akin to barrel ageing and adds a layer of complexity you wouldn’t come to expect from this style of beer.
