New Zealand Milk Stout by Cassels Brewing Co
Milk Stout, 5.2%
Traditionally brewed with non-fermentable lactose sugar for a luscious, full-bodied mouthfeel. Aromas of bittersweet chocolate, dried fruits, and bold coffee-and-cream flavours all descend on the senses, while soft roasted-malt bitterness keeps the sweetness in check.
The live tasting of this beer was on 3rd September 2020 #BeerBods

Hailing from Christchurch, New Zealand, Cassels Brewing Co began life in June of 2009. Founded by Alasdair Cassels, his son Zak, and son-in-law, Joe Shanks they set to work building their brewery completely from scratch.
“Our first challenge was to design and build a 200 litre, wood-fired brewery – the unicorn of the brewing world, it seemed. It’s not like you could go order one off the internet so we didn’t really have a lot to go on. Fortunately, Joe had trained as an aircraft engineer with Air New Zealand and so brought much-needed engineering skills to a project which could easily have stalled. This little wood-fired brewery took a few months to complete and we began brewing by September 2009.”
A year or so after opening, tragically, an earthquake destroyed the original plant, but undeterred they got right back to work and within 100 days were back up and running.
In the couple of years that followed the brewery went from strength to strength picking up awards on a national scale. In 2012 Simon Bretherton, previously of Boddingtons and Little Creatures Brewery, joined the team as Executive Brewer and they haven’t looked back.
In the eight years since, Cassels Brewing Co have begun to make a name for themselves on the international stage, with their beers becoming increasing available outside of NZ. Things came to a head last year, when this week’s BeerBods Plus beer, New Zealand Milk Stout, was awarded the title of World’s Best Stout at the World Beer Awards. Taking top billing at such a prestigious event has meant demand for Cassel’s beer has grown rapidly, and so, we were delighted when we managed to get our hands on some.
Traditionally brewed with non-fermentable lactose sugar for a luscious, full-bodied mouthfeel. This stunning example of a milk stout pairs aromas of bittersweet chocolate, dried fruits, and bold coffee-and-cream flavours with a soft roasted-malt bitterness that keeps the sweetness in check.
With further brewery expansions in the pipeline and more of Cassels wears making their way to the UK, expect to be seeing more from the Christchurch based outfit very soon.
