Cross Borders Brewing Company was founded in 2016 by childhood friends Gary Munckton and Jonathan Wilson. Both are keen musicians and in their teenage years had ambitions of becoming rockstars. Who doesn't?! But as the years passed and the dreams of world tours and screaming fans fizzled out, they quickly turned their attention to another passion they both shared; Beer.
Gary discovered his love for beer on trips to the USA. Johnny had taken things one step further, studying brewing at Heriot-Watt University. Using Gary’s background in finance to help run the business and Jonny’s education, they decided to take the plunge and start a brewery of their own.
They set up shop on the outskirts of Edinburgh in Dalkeith and started creating beers they believed would stand out in an already busy marketplace. Sessionability (if that’s even a word), was the focus from the outset and is a theme that can be seen across the majority of beers in their core range today.
They hit the ground running, with the business growing by over 300% in the first year. In 2018 their flagship beer BRAW (a Scottish expression translating as "most excellent") won a silver medal at the prestigious SIBA awards. More recently, Cross Borders have expanded production with the team doubling in size. Recent events have slowed progress a little, but with their own canning line on the way and a plan for wider distribution, you can expect to be seeing a lot more from the Dalkeith outfit in the months and years to come.
For this week’s beer, you’ll have one of three beers in your case. Like many breweries during this uncertain time, Cross Borders temporarily halted production back in March. This meant we were unable to get our hands on enough of the same beer for all of our subscribers. We were, however, able to get our hands on the remaining stock Cross Borders had in their warehouse. Result.
The line-up tonight includes;
Heavy (not to be confused with a Wee Heavy), Cross Borders take on a traditional Scottish beer style. Low in strength and Amber in colour, with notes of caramel and a solid malt backbone.
Bill’s Beer, created in partnership with the Bill Mclaren foundation. A session IPA with tropical notes of citrus, stonefruit and a smooth silky finish.
India Pale Ale, the newest addition to the breweries core range, a classic American style IPA featuring juicy Simcoe, Mosaic and Amarillo hops.
