Returning brewing to Wimborne after almost 80 years, Eight Arch Brewing Co. was founded in the winter of 2015 by Steve Farrell and is named after the eight arches at nearby landmark Julian’s Bridge in Wimborne Minster, Dorset.
Farrell’s had begun his brewing journey several years earlier, you guessed it, in his garage, after being inspired by breweries such as The Kernel and Five Points. He didn’t have an epiphany that drove him to brew, rather a desire to experiment and try his hand at a new hobby and make some affordable beer in the process. After packing in his day job in the transport industry and undertaking a number of brewing courses at Brewlab in Sunderland, he was ready to kick things off professionally.
Eight Arch’s first brew began on the 31st of January 2015 and in doing so, became the first beer to be brewed commercially in the region for close to eighty years. A little over a month later they had obtained a licence and opened their adjoining taproom, much to the delight of the locals.
By 2017 Eighth Arch had grown significantly, taking over another premises on the same site and growing the team to four people. They’d also firmly established themselves with the local community, something close to Steve and co’s heart.
“The local community has been amazing. Without them, we wouldn’t be where we are. That support has allowed us to grow and we are very fortunate.”
This growth locally began to generate a buzz around Eight Arch further afield too, leading to recognition from peers in the form of a number of awards. In 2019 the brewery, rather fittingly, picked up eight awards at the SIBA South West Regional Awards, a number of which won by this week’s beer.
Tonight’s beer, Square Logic, had picked up seven awards in its own right over the course of the last two years. Including; SIBA National Small Pack Overall Champion for 2020.
The beer itself is a super session-able pale ale, brewed with Vienna and flaked oats for a soft and pillowy mouthfeel. Pouring with a delicate haze, citrus and stonefruit flavours fall back on a low bitterness, combining to make one seriously crushable beer.
