Gloucester Brewery was founded by Jared Brown in October 2011. A chef of 10 years, he followed his yearning to be creative with hops and malt and made the switch to beer.
The first thing Jared did was contact British Waterways to see if he could build a brewery amongst one of the many fabulous buildings on Gloucester Docks. It’s a special place to enjoy a beer. It’s also the most inland port in the UK, at the end of the deepest canal in the country. Ships still travel along the canal into the docks and each year, some of the biggest join up for a Tall Ships Festival. The brewery take good advantage of the location by hosting their own set of events, such as their IPA festival and upcoming Oktoberfest. Well worth a visit, especially if the sun is shining.
From the outset, Jared’s idea was to create a range of beers with some classic styles, whilst mixing it up now and again with some more experimental beers. Beers such as Gloucester Gold, Dockside Dark, Session IPA and Imperial Stout have picked up numerous awards over the years.
Cascade is a Best Bitter using floral hops to balance a traditional malty base and roasted caramel sweetness. It’s well-balanced and tasty and a perfect example of why Best Bitter refuses to go out of fashion. The brewery still specialises in cask beer, and Cascade is the type of beer that works perfectly when poured through a handpull. All of the beers are bottled ‘live’ which means there is a small amount of yeast still in the beer which will continue to ferment and provide natural carbonation - so as close to cask as you could get.
As demand increased, Jared and the team were forced to look for a site with more space. In 2015 they moved a few doors down to a new brewery site to what was once a malthouse. The original brewery was then transformed into what is now the tap house and restaurant, called TANK. From here, you can enjoy a number of their regular beers as well as the Warehouse series, small batch runs of a variety of styles.
Jared is joined these days by a passionate team, who have set Gloucester alight with a love of good beer and good people. We’ll drink to that.
