The Story

A now stalwart of the global craft beer scene, Goose Island Beer Company was founded by John Hall way back in 1988.


The story began with a trip to Europe when founder John took a tour across the continent. Pint by pint, he savoured the styles and selections of brews in every region, and thought to himself, “America deserves some damn fine beer like this, too.”


Craft brewing wasn’t widely known at the time, but upon return from his European sojourn, John set out to change all that. He settled down in his hometown of Chicago—a city perfect for craft beer, with rapidly evolving tastes and the largest system of fresh water on the planet. And then he got to brewing.


By 1995, John’s beer had become so popular that he decided to open a larger brewery, along with a bottling plant to keep up with demand. 1999 brought even more growth, along with an additional brewpub. Fast forward to today, what was once one man’s pint-filled dream has become one of the biggest craft brewery empires on the planet. With multiple brewpubs across the globe including our very own in Shoreditch, London (well worth a visit), you’d be hard-pressed to find a craft beer lover anywhere who hadn’t heard or tried one of Goose Islands beers.

For tonight’s BeerBods Plus, we have a pretty special beer.


Obadiah Poundage is a traditional London porter brewed in collaboration with brewing historian Ron Pattinson and Wimbledon Brewery in London. Porters from 1800-1870 were blends of fresh beer with beer aged up to a year in large oak maturation vats. They used brown malt that was kilned over a wood fire, creating a rich smoked and roasted character. Obadiah Poundage has been brewed following those methods and materials as faithfully as possible, to recreate what the porter of that era tasted like. The result is a fruity, roasty, slightly smoky porter with a moderately bitter finish and slight acidity. A cult classic.
