The Story

Mentions of the Köstritzer brewery and its dark beer can be traced back as far as 1543. Known as the ‘Köstritzer Erbschenke’ back then, the brewery has been based in Bad Köstritz in Thuringia (central Germany) ever since. It is now one of the oldest breweries in Germany.

The brewery shares its name with its most famous product and tonight’s beer: Köstritzer Schwarzbier. A beer that has made a name for itself well beyond the borders of Thuringia and Germany. During the Cold War, Köstritzer was one of the few breweries in East Germany that manufactured beer for export. From 1956 to 1976, their Schwarzbier was exported to West Germany, something unheard of at the time.

Kostritzer Lifestyle2

In 1991 The Köstritzer Brewery was acquired by the Bitburger Brewery Group, and within a few years became one of the largest and most modern brewing facilities in the state of Thuringia. Köstritzer is now exported to more than 50 countries around the world, with international sales almost doubling in the last three years.

A Schwarzbier, or 'black beer', tends to have an opaque, black colour with hints of chocolate and coffee. Similar to a German Dunkel, this take on a dark lager is made from roasted malt, which gives it its dark colour. The addition of German hops gives a spicy, herbal character that defines the style. Köstritzer’s Schwarzbier is now widely regarded as the best interpretation of the style in the whole of Germany.
