Founded in late 2000 by Howard Cearns, Nic Trimboli and Phil Sexton, Little Creatures Brewery is now one of the largest and most successful craft breweries in Australia. The story began in 1997 when the trio discussed the possibility of brewing an American style Pale Ale in their home nation. A decision that is now considered by many to have been the catalyst of the craft beer revolution down under.
The name "Little Creatures" is inspired by a song lyric from the Talking Heads Little Creatures album and refers to the live yeast cells that turn the sugars in malt wort into ethanol.
They set up shop in a huge shed (and former crocodile farm) on the water’s edge in Fremantle, Western Australia and work began.
The brewery and its reputation are built on the beer we’ll be tasting this evening; Pale Ale. So much so in fact, that the brewhouse itself was designed specifically to brew this single style of beer. Little Creature’s Pale takes nearly six weeks to brew, using the best hops from both Australia and the United States. The result was a beer that took Aussie beer-drinkers and the Australian beer scene by storm.
By 2013 the brewery had expanded significantly, operating two breweries on opposite sides of the country. By 2015, their beers had started to make their way around the globe. Today, Little Creatures operate over multiple geographies, with additional breweries in both the UK and USA, brewing millions of pints a year and flying the flag for Aussie craft beer around the globe.
For tonight’s beer we have Little Creature’s flagship and world-famous, Pale Ale. Little Creatures introduce it for us…
“We were born to make Pale Ale, a style that was little known in Australia when we started. Back in the day there were two hop varieties coming out of the North West of the US that really took our fancy; Cascade and Chinook hops. These packed an addictive punch and gave rise to the super hoppy American Pale Ale, a style that inspired us back then and still inspires us today.
Since day one, we have brewed our Pale using whole hop cones, sourced straight from both Australia and the US directly to our breweries and use our hop back to extract those beautiful, hoppy aromas and delicate bitterness. Preservative and additive-free, our Pale Ale is live yeast conditioned, for unmatched freshness and character. It has inspired the craft beer movement in Australia, and has consistently been voted as one of Australia's best beers, every year, since it's creation in 2001.”
