Quantock Brewery was founded in December 2007 in Wellington, Somerset by beer lover, head brewer and founder, Rob Rainey. Rob purchased his first homebrew kit from Boots but when this didn’t produce the quality of beer he wanted, Rob, a former nuclear engineer, built his own kit from scratch. The rest, as they say, is history.
“Rob’s philosophy was to brew the highest quality ales using the best natural ingredients. He wanted all the beers to be brewed entirely from the highest quality grain and whole hop cones, the only other ingredients being yeast and water. No chemicals or sugar are added to the beers to ensure flavour is pure. Rob strives to produce quality beers that have flavour and character, far different from the mass-produced beers traditionally found in pubs across the UK.”
In 2015, Quantock were ready to expand, moving to a larger facility in Bishops Lydeard, Somerset. The new site allowed them not only to produce more beer but to open their brewery shop and taproom; a must-visit if you’re ever in the area.
By 2017, Quantock had increased their capacity further, after securing substantial investment through crowdfunding. This expansion brought with it a new range of beer and a move away from their more traditional core range of beers. Beers like QPA and Titanium immediately opened Quantock up to a new audience of craft beer drinkers and were quickly recognised by the industry, picking up multiple SIBA awards.
For tonight’s beer, we have one of Quantock’s most exciting beers to date. Obsessed with Bru-1 makes up part of the new ‘Obsessed With’ range, a collection of beers dedicated entirely to hops. Each beer explores one hop variety, letting their distinct aromas and flavours shine through. The somewhat new and elusive Bru-1 hop brings huge aromas of pineapple and stone fruit and is backed by a soft spice that lingers on the palate.
