Located in the end shed of Melton Mowbray Market, Round Corner Brewing is the brainchild of close friends Colin Paige and Combie Cryan. The brewery was founded in late 2018, with the duo’s first brew making its way into punters hands Christmas that year. In early 2019 they landed themselves some funding, broke ground on their very own brewery and taproom and haven’t looked back since.
Head brewer Colin brings with him a wealth of experience, after heading up brewing efforts at the likes of Thunder Road Brewing in Australia and New Zealand’s Mac’s Brewery - both of which won numerous awards whilst under his leadership. After returning to the UK in 2017, Colin took on a head brewer role at Butcombe Brewery, helping them to win their first-ever gold medal at the World Beer Awards.
Combie heads up the business side of things, he brought the brewery to Melton market and in Round Corner’s Words “tries to boss (he calls it ‘guiding’) everyone around.”
In the short time since launch, Round Corner have already started to make waves across the brewing industry. Most notably for picking up a gold and silver medal at the world beer awards in their first year of trading.
We first came across Round Corner at the beginning of 2020 and were so impressed we ended up featuring them in our Ones to Watch box for 2020. Since then, we’ve been inundated with requests to feature them in our BeerBods boxes. We’re delighted to have finally managed to make it happen.
Tonight’s beer, Mackinaw, is Round Corner’s take on an American Brown Ale. They introduce it for us…
“This American Brown ale, with its 7 malt and 3 hop varieties(Cascade, Amarillo and Crystal), has luscious malt characteristics of chocolate, nutty caramel and dates. Balanced by citrus and marmalade characteristics of the US hops. Bitter and malty. Winter greatness....just like the Mackinaw cloth it is named for. A fabric, like our own Melton Cloth, which has clad workers and fashionistas across the ages. Mackinaw and Melton. Here's to common roots and shared dreams.”
