New Belgium Brewing started life in 1988, after founders Kim Jordan and Jeff Lebesch spent a summer cycling through Belgium. Inspired by the beers they discovered, they returned to their hometown of Fort Collins, Colorado and hatched a plan to bring Belgian brewing traditions to the states. New Belgium Brewing was born.
They got to work setting up shop in the basement of their Fort Collins home. By March 1991 they were ready, and brewing began. In June of the same year, test brewing began on an Amber Ale lovingly named Fat Tire. It was released at the Colorado beer festival later that month and received critical acclaim. It’s safe to say New Belgium were on to something.
In the 30 years that have followed New Belgium have accomplished more than most breweries on the planet. Aside from the countless awards and becoming the 4th largest craft brewer in the states. New Belgium has spearheaded the sustainability movement amongst breweries across the pond. Becoming one of the first breweries to be B-corp certified which included installing what at the time, was the largest private solar array in the state of Colorado.
In 2017 New Belgium released 3 IPA’s under the name Voodoo Ranger. Less than a year later Voodoo Ranger had become a brand of its own, focusing solely on the production of IPAs. Fast forward to 2021, it is now one of the biggest IPA brands in the USA and has begun to make its way around the globe.
For tonight’s beer we have Hazy IPA. Exclusively brewed for the UK market, Hazy IPA is everything you’d want from the east coast style. Huge notes of citrus on the nose, boatloads of tropical fruit flavours, a full body and silky soft mouthfeel all balanced against a low bitterness. An exceptional example of the style.
