Lightly hopped using Phoenix hops from the UK. Rich chocolate and coffee flavours are wrapped in a mouth-filling smokiness from the German malt. Dark as night, with a smooth aftertaste.

The Story

Based in Kinloss, in the incredibly picturesque wilds of the Scottish Highlands, WooHaa Brewing have been steadily growing in capacity and notoriety since 2015. The brewery was founded by Heather McDonald and set out with a simple aim. 

“We wanted to brew beers that were high in quality but low in pretentiousness!  Acceptable to most wallets but premium in the way in which they were crafted and taste.” 

Heather had started her career as a microbiologist before moving into the world of finance. Her father had always joked that she should use her knowledge of microbiology to brew better-tasting beer, a memory that came back to her whilst touring a distillery in 2013.

I began thinking that a brewery provided the perfect opportunity to get back into science, but with my experience of finance and business, I knew it would have the potential for growth and export too. Over the next year I learned how to brew and, using my savings, I incorporated the business in June 2014 and started trading in March 2015.

Since then, WooHaa have garnered praise for the quality and distinctive character of their beers. The water used at the brewery is taken from the river Spey, made famous by some of Scotland’s finest whisky brands. It’s this water that makes WooHaa’s beers almost impossible to replicate anywhere else in the world.

By 2017 WooHaa had outgrown their brewery in Nairn, moving just a few miles down the road to their now home in Kinloss. The move has allowed them to expand significantly, now employing a team of 13 people, churning out just shy of 100,000 pints a year and exporting to five countries.

For tonight’s beer, we have Rauch and Roll, a smoked porter that pays tribute to many of the peated Whisky’s synonymous with the region. WooHaa introduce it for us;

“Rauch and Roll is a delicious smoky porter, lightly hopped using Phoenix hops from the UK.  It has rich chocolate and coffee flavours which are wrapped in a mouth-filling smokiness, provided by the German Rauch malt. Dark as night, with a smooth aftertaste! Weighing in at just 5% ABV, it goes down far too easily!”
